Is Bangkok Still An Expat Hotspot Or Is It Losing Its Appeal?

    By MarkDecember 29, 2022No Comments3 Mins Read

Bangkok is one of the most visited cities in the entire world with approximately 22.7-million international visitors each year. While this number has certainly changed over recent years, what with the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s safe to say that The Big Mango is widely popular among tourists and expats alike.

But, is Bangkok still the expat hotspot it once was? Or is it losing its appeal? Let’s take a closer look…

Is Bangkok still an expat hotspot?

While Bangkok has gone through some fluctuation in terms of tourism levels over recent years, the destination still very much remains one of the most popular expat destinations in the world.

Yes, there are a lot of up-and-coming destinations in South-East-Asia that provide a similar quality of life, however, Bangkok, Thailand, still very much remains the GOAT – alongside Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Ho Chi Min.

    Bangkok gets a bad rap

Bangkok is arguably one of the most frequently misunderstood locations in the world. For those who have never visited, they can only base their judgements on what they have heard. Given that Bangkok is notorious for its vibrant and colourful nightlife, most people assume that it is only popular among old, single Western men, however, this couldn’t be further from the truth. The fact is, Bangkok is popular for many people, whether they be families with young children, couples, retirees, and more! There’s far more to be unearthed!

Why is Bangkok so popular with expats?

Bangkok is popular for a wide variety of reasons and therein lies the secret to its success; because it has something for everyone.

    • Some people flock to Bangkok for the vibrant and colourful nightlife.
    • Others love Bangkok for the world-class cuisine (both Thai and International).
    • Many people love the immense shopping opportunities.
    • For the largest outdoor market in Asia.
    • A rich, cultural tapestry.
    • Festivals and events (see Songkran!)
    • Temples and historical landmarks.
    • Career opportunities.
    • Plenty of international schools (ideal for teachers and/or families with children).
    • Exceptional healthcare facilities.
    • Good public transport and infrastructure.
    • World-class cosmetic surgery industry.
    • Superior and affordable dental work.
    • Roof-top cocktails in luxury bars.
    • Low cost of living (Bangkok is very cheap compared to London / New York).
    • Affordable high-end accommodation.

These are just a handful of the amazing advantages that life in Bangkok has to offer expats. It’s such a truly unique and exciting location that people of all ages and walks of life can find something they love in this magnificent city.

Yes, some expats certainly prefer living outside the big city in favour of the countryside for hiking or a tropical beach island retreat to enjoy regular scuba diving, however, for the most part, the real action is in Thailand’s capital city of Bangkok.
