Early Warning Signs of Varicose Veins You May Be Missing

    By MarkDecember 29, 2021Updated:February 7, 2022No Comments3 Mins Read

Did you know 23 percent of the US population has varicose veins? The documented statistics do not paint the true picture as a significant percentage of the population living with undiagnosed varicose veins. We spoke to experts of varicose veins in Glen Rock to understand the early warning signs and spot them before they progress. Progressive Spine & Sports Medicine center employs innovative patient-centered remedies to varicose veins. The following signs and symptoms will help you in seeking assistance at the center.

    What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged bumpy discolored superficial veins. Varicose veins occur due to weakened valves and veins that cause improper blood flow. Varicose veins appear commonly on the leg or arms. The outright sign of varicose veins is the enlarged pink or bluish-colored veins. However, your leg may be normal, and you still have varicose veins.

    Varicose signs you should know

Some signs you may have may not be conventional symptoms of any vein disease; however, you may find varicose veins are the root cause of a deep investigation. The signs you need to pay attention to include:

    1. Itching sensation on the affected area

Even after applying topical creams to relieve the itch, an itching sensation is a sign of varicose veins. At this stage, the varicose veins are invisible. Early intervention is key to effectively treating them.

    2. Skin discoloration

If you notice irregular patches of skin with different colors that appear darker or shinier than normal, contact a varicose veins specialist. The discolored patches are usually very tender.

    3. Blood clots

When blood cannot recirculate back to the body due to weakened valves, blood clots begin to form inside in a condition known as deep vein thrombosis. Deep Vein thrombosis is not fatal; however, when varicose veins advance, they may develop into pulmonary embolism, which is fatal.

    4. Inflammation of the leg

Varicose veins cause blood pooling in the veins. When blood remains stagnant, clots form and cause thrombophlebitis, which is a condition that inflames your legs. If you notice any inflammation in the leg, you may have varicose veins or a similar vein disease. The condition is not life-threatening; however, you should seek treatment.

    5. Venous skin ulcer

Venous skin ulcers are swollen red patches on your leg. Varicose veins cause thinning of the veins, and hence the blood buildup causes leakage into neighboring tissues. As blood leaks, it manifests as red patches that are sensitive to touch. If leg ulcers are exposed to bacteria, they may aggravate varicose veins or cause new illnesses.

    Diagnosis of varicose veins

Signs of varicose veins help you seek treatment. You should not self-diagnose yourself based on signs and symptoms only. Visit a vascular center with varicose veins specialists for accurate diagnosis.

After diagnosis, your doctor will recommend a suitable treatment option. Some standard varicose treatments include radiofrequency ablation, sclerotherapy, ambulatory phlebectomy, and vein stripping.

    Where to find treatment

If you notice any of the above signs, schedule an appointment at Progressive Spine & Sports Medicine Center. The state-of-the-art technology and a dedicated team of doctors will offer you an accurate diagnosis and efficacious treatment plans. Reach them out to find a suitable treatment for you.
