IIT JEE is an important exam to crack for those who want to pursue their undergraduate degrees in engineering from IITs (Indian Institute of Technology). Students seeking admission to these institutes have to go through two phases of the exam, IIT Advanced followed by IIT Mains. Every year approximately 10 lakh students appear for the exam to secure their positions in IITs, NITs, and other reputed engineering colleges. This exam is one of the difficult exams to clear and hence, requires a correct preparation method. Many students prefer to go to the coaching centres for exam preparation. However, some aspirants are unable to afford coaching. Thus, they have only one way left to prepare for the JEE exam. And that is Self Study.
In this article, JEE aspirants will get to know how they can prepare for the exam at their home.
Preparation tips for JEE exam at home
-
Check out the latest exam pattern and syllabus
The exam pattern of JEE Mains has changed. According to the latest JEE Main exam pattern, the question paper will contain 90 multiple choice questions out of which students have to attempt only 75 MCQs. In each subject- Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, there will be 20 MCQs and 10 numerical answer type questions. However, candidates have to answer only 5 questions out of 10 numerical value questions.
Now speaking about the syllabus, there is no such change in it, but NTA (National Testing Agency) has decided to give choices in numerical value-based problems.
-
Purchase required study materials and books
Students preparing for JEE at home should first buy the required study materials and books. Check out the PDF study materials for IIT JEE on the web to stick to the JEE focused syllabus only. Students can buy reference books for different subjects, but they shouldn’t underestimate NCERT books. Before reading the reference books, they must go through the NCERT books thoroughly.
-
Create a schedule and follow it regularly
While preparing for JEE, it is important to make a study schedule and stick to it to complete the syllabus on time. To begin with, making a timetable, keep in mind to equally distribute time to all three subjects- Physics, Chemistry and Maths. Additionally, candidates must understand the importance of consistency. To maintain consistency, they should cover a few topics of each subject every day instead of studying the extra syllabus all night and sleeping the next day. It’s better to study regularly by investing equal hours in all subjects. This way students can cover the entire syllabus on time without frustrating themselves.
-
Discard all disturbance at home
Staying and studying at home all day may sometimes be frustrating and annoying, so it is necessary that students don’t get disturbed and may not lose their focus on studies and preparation. Try to avoid spending extra time on WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms. One should get rid of all distractions to keep himself dedicated to his studies.
-
Fall in love with the subjects
To fall in love with Chemistry, Maths and Physics, a candidate must try to make his studies interesting and entertaining. Students can do so by discovering new methods for solving questions, understanding real-life examples or seeking help from their dedicated teachers. They can also seek help from their friends with whom they like to engage.
-
Manage time between studies and other works
Managing time during the JEE exam preparation is crucial as one has to make a balance between his studies and other tasks. Long and continuous study hours are exhausting. Whereas, taking too many breaks between the study session may lead to incompletion of the syllabus.
-
Concentrate on small goals to achieve huge targets
The JEE syllabus is too vast to cover. However, a student can easily complete it by dividing it into small modules. Pick up a single topic at a time and cover its concepts thoroughly. After that, solve its relevant questions to store concepts in mind. Once that is over, move on to the next topic of the syllabus. When any test or exam approaches, revise theory, formulas and solve problems related to all chapters.
-
Attain good theoretical information of all topics
It is crucial to have good theoretical information on all topics as it enables students to have a rough idea of questions asked in the exam. If one has theoretical concepts at his fingertips, then he will get the idea of putting probable concepts to solve the question.
-
Solve questions regularly
JEE is one of those exams that requires a lot of practice. Therefore, aspirants must build a habit of solving problems daily. Spend at least 40 to 50 minutes solving questions every day. If any student is unable to solve numericals, then he must refer to the theory again and understand it till he feels confident about it. Seek assistance from mentors or friends if required.
-
Don’t get depressed
Many students lose hope or get depressed when they are unable to solve questions. Instead, they should put their best efforts into learning and understanding the concepts again. If they follow this tactic continuously, then automatically their performance will enhance and their marks will increase.
-
Complete targets on time
The JEE preparation process requires students to understand and solve the concept related problems followed by reading them. Aspirants must make sure that they can achieve daily and weekly targets. They should complete their homework and assignments on time and take every task seriously.
-
Make notes and revise them daily
JEE aspirants must keep on revising things that they have understood. Revise concepts every day, every week and every month. For the first time, students have to invest extra time in understanding things, but as the revision progresses, it will take less time to comprehend concepts. For a quick revision, it is recommended to make notes of every chapter.
-
Give tests for performance assessment
Serious JEE aspirants must give regular tests to analyse their performance. They should begin with time-bound topic-wise tests, then to full-length mock test papers followed by multiple topics test papers.
-
Focus on time management
In the main examination or solving test papers, always give a specific period to each section and try to solve them in the allotted time. Candidates should attempt those sections first that are clear in their minds.
