Tying the Knot: 7 Things Your Loved Ones Probably Won’t Tell You About Getting Married

Marriage has been a part of most cultures for thousands of years. Unfortunately, the institution of marriage has suffered in recent years, with many couples choosing simply not to get married. They may still live together, raise families, and share finances – they just don’t kick it all off with a ceremony or signed contract.

Although the number of couples getting married these days is dwindling, some people do still choose to tie the knot. If you’re thinking of getting married, check out the information below. We’re willing to bet there are a few things in there you didn’t know.

    1. Marriage Offers Financial Security

Married couples enjoy a few tax breaks that single people can’t take. Also, legal things like inheritances and property ownership are easier to figure out when a couple is married.

Though there certainly are benefits, people sometimes pay more taxes than they would have if they hadn’t gotten married. Since you and your partner will have your own unique circumstances, it’s a good idea to use an individual income tax calculator. That way, you’ll know ahead of time if you fall into this category.

    2. Married Couples Are More Likely to Stay Together

In a world where marriage isn’t a priority anymore, the fact remains that married couples are more likely to stay together than couples who simply cohabitate. Before using this as your motivation, however, remember that their reasons for staying together are not always about love.

    3. Infidelity Happens

Getting married does not guarantee fidelity. Although marriage legally binds two people, humans are not always faithful. The two most common times for infidelity are in the younger years (when sex drives tend to be stronger) and any time a couple’s sex life dwindles (especially if it’s for a prolonged period).

    4. Marriage Is a Partnership

Married couples are often well-equipped to weather the ups and downs of life because they can lean on and talk to each other. Though there are plenty of benefits to single life, it can make crisis moments more difficult since you don’t have someone who’s always in your corner.

    5. Family Conflict Can Be a Problem

As the old saying goes, “when you marry your partner, you marry their family too.” A spouse’s family can be challenging, especially if they’re prone to drama and conflict. So, make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into before you tie the knot.

    6. Getting Married Is Expensive

The marriage ceremony and reception can be costly and stressful to plan. Families can butt in and sideline your or your partner’s wishes. Ultimately, it can be all for naught if you discover you married the wrong person and end up getting divorced (also extremely expensive). So, once again, look before you leap!

    7. Marriage Can Foster a Spiritual Connection

In many cultures, marriage and religion go hand-in-hand. Getting married often deepens the spiritual connection between two people, enabling them to form a closer bond with their god or spiritual practices.

    8. Marriage Is Often Seen as Conforming

Many people question why you’d want to get the government or the church involved in your relationship. They see marriage as blindly conforming to norms. If this sounds like anyone you know, you may receive pushback from them when you announce your nuptials.

Getting married is a personal choice that only you and your partner can make. Facts and statistics are helpful, but they shouldn’t influence your decision too greatly. Instead, do what makes your heart happy and take the good with the bad, knowing you have each other to lean on.
